The newly formed Cabinet met for the first time yesterday, marking, as far as Mr Christie was concerned, 'day one' of the administration's first 100 days of governance.

Mr Christie said: "I'm mixing the old with the new, experience with innovation, the first order of business is to sit and get to know each other, to see each other sitting around the table.

"We've indicated over and over that the country is in crisis when it comes to crime and when it comes to the economy, when you have a country where over 34 per cent of the people are unemployed, and a country where murders continue unabated, then you know that very radical initiatives are necessary."

He added: "We want to begin today to examine those initiatives."

Cabinet ministers were briefed on the economic status of the country by Minister of State for Finance Michael Halkitis yesterday.

With only two weeks until the 2012/2013 national budget is presented to Parliament, Mr Christie said that his government won't have much time to make many changes.

"Very clearly the extent of our debt, the deficit that we met in place, the amount of money we have to borrow, will influence how we govern, and how we integrate our priorities into governance," he said.

During its 2012 election campaign, the Progressive Liberal Party pledged to implement several key initiatives over the first three months.

Among the projects outlined in the Charter for Governance were to:

  • Institute a a mortgage relief plan in conjunction with private sector lenders to help struggling homeowners;
  • initiate a plan to lower the cost of electricity;
  • and to provide details for a referendum on a National Lottery and gambling in The Bahamas.

Mr Christie said he has already began to deliver on the mandate through the creation of the ministries of Grand Bahama and Financial Services.

"It's day one give us an opportunity to move, I think we are excited, we know the opportunity we've been given, we are deeply challenged by the circumstances of our economy," he said.

In December, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned that the former Free National Movement administration's plans were 'not sufficient' to reverse the then $4.25 billion national debt, adding that the failure to rapidly implement tax reforms 'could jeopardise a sustained recovery' in the Bahamas.

According to Tribune Business, the consultation report also noted that borrowings associated with the Government's infrastructure upgrades had made the fiscal position more 'vulnerable'.

Speaking outside the Churchill Building yesterday, Mr Christie said: "We're just in the process now of having briefing papers provided to us, trying to get an understanding really of what exists."

53 murders and counting..in paradise, in the Bahamas. We don't need to hear too much more about more police cars and more patrols and stiffer jail sentences (except as an interim measure). We need a psychological evaluation of our young male population to find out why young men are killing up one another at an alarming and increasing rate. After the murder is done and bodies lay dead in the street or some car or house it is too late. Too many young men have been displaced and left behind by our ever rapidly changing social and economic envrionment. They must now compete on a global scale just to make a living ANd many have become violent and antisocial beacuse they feel they are failures and the pressure to achieve is too great. They are rebelling because they feel their rights and freedom are being taken away. They are being crowded out, especially in New Providence. When we fix this problem and allow the these young males to take their rightful place in this Bahamian society, we should need less policemen, less police cars, less courts and judges. The killings will stop. In fact most of the gates to cells in Fox Hill prison will be swinging free and open because the cells will be empty..save for few hardened and career criminals..thats the Bahamas I dream about. (and I dream in color red, green or gold the problem can be fixed) Ensure that young Bahamians get their inheriitance..a piece of the Bahamian economic pie..the uneducated and impovished need it the most..
