AFTER a long wait, Grand Bahama returned to the Commonwealth American Football League (CAFL) this weekend.
The Orry J Sands Pros moved to 1-1 with a 20-18 win over the Freeport Hurricanes in their 2012 debut at Independence Park in Grand Bahama on Saturday.
The Pros scored two rushing touchdowns in the first half, added a passing touchdown in the third, and sealed the win with and a late game stop on a two-point conversion. After several drives which came up short, Jamal Coleby put the Pros on the scoreboard first with an eight-yard touchdown score.
Ashley Roberts added the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead in the first quarter.
After the Hurricances responded with a score two drives later, Jay Lockhart scored from one yard out to give the Pros a 14-6 lead headed into the half.
The Hurricanes answered with an 80-yard touchdown on a trick play, a receiver screen option pass, to trim the deficit 14-12.
Mike Foster connected with Antonio Bullard early in the fourth quarter to give the Pros a 20-12 lead.
The Hurricanes scored their third touchdown of the game with 1:10 remaining in the game, but the Pros defense stopped the conversion to clinch the team’s first win of the season on the road.
The Hurricanes, in an attempt to bring the CAFL back to Grand Bahama after six years, played their first game in over 20 years.
The Campbell’s V-Fusion Stingrays currently top the CAFL standings at 2-0 after back to back 28-14 wins over the Pros and the BailCo Jets.
The Pros and Jets are slated to square off at DW Davis Field 1:30pm Sunday.
