FREEPORT – AS the cost of electricity continues to be a major challenge for businesses, Minister for Grand Bahama Dr Michael Darville says the government is putting necessary legislation in place that would safeguard consumers from being charged too much.

Dr Darville spoke at the official opening of the Solomon’s Lucaya store. AML Foods Limited has invested about $4 million into the new store, which currently employs some 60 persons.

The high cost of electricity has caused the closure of a number of major businesses on Grand Bahama over the years, including Fenestration Glass Company, SavMore Foodstore, and the City Markets Foodstores, and others.

There have been complaints from businesses in the manufacturing sectors that electricity costs are eating away at their profits.

While addressing persons on Friday, Minister Darville said: “It is my understanding that the cost of electricity continues to be a challenge to profitability at this store and other businesses across Grand Bahama.

“I want to assure you that the government is aware of the need to minimise energy costs, and is putting the necessary legislation in place to ensure that the regulatory bodies in Grand Bahama comply with government policy and aren’t overcharging customers.”

He said they are also exploring the use of sustainable and alternative forms of energy and have established a National Energy Policy that will reduce and eventually alleviate the use of fossil fuels to generate energy.

“This will undoubtedly reduce energy costs and increase profit margins,” he added.

Dr Darville commended AML Foods for opening another Solomon’s store in the Lucaya.

“It is my understanding that Grand Bahamian consumers are supporting this store and are very pleased with the quality of service and products.

“Therefore, I would like to once again congratulate AML Foods for supplying Grand Bahamians with this essential facility and urge you to continue to provide quality and cost-effective merchandise.”

He extended best wishes and continued success in the company’s present and future endeavours.
