CHILDREN at the Elizabeth Estates children’s home can now browse the internet for research papers, complete homework assignments, learn about other countries, play online games, and maintain their own email accounts – all in a comfortable environment.
Minister of Social Services and Community Development, Melanie Griffin, officially opened the newly refurbished and renovated computer lab at the home on Tuesday.
Work on the $16,000 facility was done by a team of BTC employees, who worked to transform the space from a run down out dated room with old desks and furniture into a bright, newly outfitted computer lab, with state-of-the art computers and new furniture.
BTC’s iVolunteer program outfitted the computer lab with a wireless router, 12 computers with an HP Printer, new desks, a newly tiled floor, a fresh paint job, blinds, ceiling fans, and a new air conditioning system.
The iVolunteer program, is an employee volunteer program which identifies needs within the community and lets workers help people using company money.
“At BTC we believe that a good corporate citizen does more than just give money to charity,” said Senior VP Commercial & Family Islands Tellis Symonette.
“We believe in touching lives, just as we touch hundreds of thousands of our customers around this country every day.”
He told the audience of invited guests: “Just as BTC is changing lives across the Bahamas with the latest innovations in technology, we are helping to improve the lives of our citizens through our charity work.”
Minister Griffin, said: “It will promote the educational advancement of the residents. It is our desire that children in care have the same opportunities as other children and are provided with the necessary tools to develop to their full potential.
“In this information age, knowledge and effective use of the computer along with the internet are essential. This refurbished and upgraded computer lab will assist in this regard.”
This is the second project of this nature to be completed by the BTC iVolunteer program. In April BTC completed work on the Old Bite Cat Island Children’s Home. The company donated $15,000 worth of equipment and services to that project.
The event, held on the grounds of the Elizabeth Estates home, was capped off with a surprise performance by international recording artist, Jah Cure.
Minister Griffin did the honours and cut the ribbon to officially open the computer lab.
