BURNT human remains found in Cat Island are being treated as a murder by police.

Officers were notified of a ‘strange odour’ in the area of a track road in Devils Point shortly before midnight on Thursday, October 18.

When they got there police discovered unidentifiable charred remains.

Last night police said the circumstances surrounding the incident were unknown but a team of officers from New Providence’s Central Detective Unit have flown out to the island to help the investigation.

An officer in Cat Island told the Tribune the remains were thought to belong to a man - a resident of Cat Island, and police were ‘in the process’ of locating the person thought to be responsible for the man’s death.

“It’s a shock. Nothing like this has ever occurred before. Usually out-islands don’t see those type of activities especially Cat Island - it’s not violent,” the officer said. “Only two incidents have occurred this year that have resulted in persons being murdered.”

Police are also investigating an alleged drowning.

Shortly after 9am on Saturday, a man was found floating in waters off Great Harbour Cay in the Berry Islands.

The victim is believed to be in his early thirties and police say no further information is known.

In separate cases, seven persons were arrested and 13 drivers were cited this past weekend in New Providence.

The arrests and citations were made by Central Division Officers between 8pm Friday and 4am Saturday.

One person was arrested in reference to counterfeit currency, two persons were arrested for possession of dangerous drugs, another arrested for possession of dangerous drugs with intent to supply, two arrested for threats of harm and assault with a deadly weapon, and another with reference to damage.
