Hurricane Sandy has now upgraded to a category two storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph and is currently moving between the northwest coast of Cuba and the central Bahamas at 18mph, according to information from the National Hurricane Centre (NHC).
The storm is situated about 130 miles south of Great Exuma and 75 miles north of Holguin Cuba, according to the NHC.
Models show the storm downgrading to a category one as it progresses over the Bahamas. However, those models could change.
Storm shelters are now open and the government has advised anyone in need of shelter to use them.
All government offices and all schools are now closed, while some private businesses remain open.
A hurricane warning is in effect for the southeastern, central and northwestern Bahamas.
(NHC: A hurricane warning means that hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area. Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion.)
