FOR the first time in more than 30 years, a new Member of Parliament for the North Abaco constituency, the PLP’s Renardo Curry, was sworn into the House of Assembly, rewriting Bahamian politics.
Former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham preceded Mr Curry in representing the seat for 35 consecutive years.
Standing yesterday to make his maiden address to the robust cheers of his colleagues and a packed gallery of family and supporters, Mr Curry thanked his constituents for the opportunity to serve.
Explaining that plans are already in the making for North Abaco, he said the government aims to better the lives of all who live in that constituency. Scores more of Mr Curry’s supporters, who packed the House’s lobby, on occasion cheered as the plans were announced.
“There is much work to be done in North Abaco,” Mr Curry said, “We must invest in education and training from our pre-schoolers to our post-secondary, young men and women, if we are to maintain a competitive edge in the global marketplace.
“The government has committed to the construction of three pre-school units, the establishment of Urban Renewal 2.0 in Abaco and the pavement of thoroughfares in a number of our communities. I will work assiduously to cause to be established a BTVI campus in Abaco to address the training needs of our growing and dynamic workforce.”
When House proceedings ended, a large crowd flanked Mr Curry as he made his exit.
Speaking to reporters the MP said: “I feel so good. Man, it’s just an exciting feeling thus far being sworn in. The love and support that people showed out here for me is just overwhelming. I’m very excited to see that the people are so supportive of me.”
