A SURGEON was arraigned in the magistrates’ court yesterday charged in connection with the traffic deaths of two motorcyclists last weekend.
Dr Larano Knowles, 33, a surgeon at the Princess Margaret Hospital, appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Carolita Bethell facing four charges of killing in the course of dangerous driving.
Dr Knowles was charged twice with each of the following charges: Killing in the course of dangerous driving – speed, and killing by cause of dangerous driving – manner.
It is claimed that on Sunday, October 14, he caused the deaths of 19-year-old George Outten and 20-year-old Roscoe Seymour.
Both young men, on motorcycles, were riding east on West Bay Street when they collided with a 1996 Toyota Mark 11 heading west.
Both motorcyclists were critically injured and one was pronounced dead at the scene, the other a short time later in hospital.
Dr Knowles was not required to enter a plea to the charges. He will stand trial on November 19 before Magistrate Jeanine Weech-Gomez.
Before the conclusion of the arraignment before the deputy chief magistrate, Dr Knowles’ attorneys Christina Galanos and Roger Gomez II argued that the charges were duplicitous.
The deputy chief magistrate said she agreed though she set the matter down for transfer to the traffic court.
Dr Knowles’ police bail of $5,000 was extended as he had had no previous brushes with the law.
