THE Holland College Hurricanes have become accustomed to Bahamian players on their roster and the latest group looks to continue that tradition in 2012.

After a rain delay that lasted nearly three hours, the Hurricanes eventually opened the season with a 16-7 win over the UNB Saint John Seawolves in Atlantic Football League action on Saturday night.

Cornerback Wayde Higgs Jr had one of three turnovers for the Hurricanes defense with a fumble recovery early in the third quarter. He also finished with three solo tackles and a 20-yard punt return.

Half-back Leslie Green also had a 30-yard catch on the offensive side of the ball.

Higgs said the weather delay proved to be beneficial as he geared up for his Hurricanes debut.

“For the first time in my career I didn’t face first game jitters. I think it was a result of the long lightning delay that was over two hours and it had me eager to get on the field alongside the confidence level and high expectations I have for me and the team,” he said.

“Although it was wet and cold it still made out to be a great night for football and I’m confident that we can go all the way and maybe repeat as champions.”

On Saturday (September 22) at 1pm, the Hurricanes are scheduled to host the University of New Brunswick Red Bombers at UPEI Alumni Canada Games Place.

“I am looking forward for this weeks matchup which will be a rematch of last year’s championship game when we faced off against the Red Bombers which I was told has three great receivers coming down from the CIS,” Higgs said, “Can’t wait to face them and challenge their receivers, it should be a great game and match up for fans to watch, players to coach and players to play.”
