GB power officially opnes its $80M generation plant

The Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC) has officially opened its $80 million West Sunrise Plant (WSP).

The 52 MW plant was fully operational in July this year, and is a key milestone in Emera’s strategy to deliver efficient, reliable electrical service to customers across Grand Bahama. The West Sunrise Plant employs 35 Bahamians who have completed the company’s training programme.

Chris Huskilson, Emera’s president and chief executive, said: “When Emera took over majority ownership of GBPC, we developed a three-step approach to improving the reliability and efficiency of electric service.

“The new plant is part of our plan to bring stability and reliability to the electricity system on Grand Bahama.”

Ian Fair, the Grand Bahama Port Authority’s chairman, said: “This new plant will not only serve as a reliable and efficient energy source but as an economic stimulus for Grand Bahama.

“Further employment opportunities now exist for skilled Bahamians to operate and maintain this world-class facility.”

Michael Darville, minister for Grand Bahama, added: “While the Government appreciates your mammoth investment in power generation in Grand Bahama, we would like you to assist us in ensuring that Grand Bahamians see a significant decrease in the price of electricity, which will mutually benefit all stakeholders, including your company.”
