Around 50 BEC workers are demonstrating outside of the company's headquarters on Baillou Hill Road.
The demonstration was reportedly prompted after the corporation fired one employee and suspended another.
The workers are waiting for the union vice president and the fired employee to make a statement.
More workers are continuing to walk off the job.
BEC Chairman Leslie Miller is now on the scene.
More news as it comes.

Bahamian people are sick and tired of unions, everytime they protest 9 out of 10 times it is for some employee who ain do nothing,?B.E.C. like every other government corporation is a who you know job,so governments dug this grave for themselves, now they are trying to rectify a problem which is going to be very difficult,my opinion privatize that will end the problem right there.

I wish we'd get more of the meat of the story. Why was this lady fired? If the contract said terminated employees must be given a reason then who is Mr. Miller to do otherwise? Is he the only person on the board that can make a decision? UGHHHH... He needs a PR person badly.
concernedcitizen 11 years, 7 months ago
I,M not PLP but potcake got my support on this one ,,we are having trouble competeing in the region b/c our power cost so much ,,80,000 to 1man in overtime ,,,,,,,about 1 million split btw/ 13 people in 6 months and i have trouble paying my light bill in a little 1 bedroom house ,,,,

I fully agree, it's outrageous that they're being paid so much in overtime alone. I just have a few doubts. Why have we only seen a document detailing overtime for a year? If these figures were so outrageous for lets say 5-10 years, I'd be 100% behind Miller even with his inhumane attitude!
But...I feel like these people haven't been getting this amount in overtime for 5 or 10 years. I feel their overtime is somewhat isolated with a major contributory factor being the road works project and other infrastructural projects that took place over the last 5 years.
Salaries and overtime pay are only a drop in the bucket of BEC's expenses. They certainly aren't the reason for our inflated bills either. It's only a distraction from the fact that Mr. Miller has no intention of seeking cleaner and more efficient energy sources. He wants to bully and we let him so he will.
Don't get me wrong, BEC needs some serious cleaning up, but it doesn't need to start with the workers. It needs to start with the Managers who let it get to this point! You can fire the workers or cut their pay and put them on shifts, but those inept and ineffective managers will still sign off on the extra shifts or the overtime.
bismark 11 years, 7 months ago
for many years B.E.C workers were making excessive overtime, yes you are correct about the workers,it is the lousy managers who sit on their a.....es and think they are smarter than everybodyelse but are not contributing no sort of plan or action in order for them to provide us with the service we deserve, because we pay them a very good salary,i say cut all of their salaries from the GM DOWN,we should see some results by then,i sure he would not mind taking a pay cut him and his managers, they should lead by example

Once again, if the FNM did what Potcake is doing, every union organization would be in an uproar mode. As an FNM supporter, I fully support what the PLP is doing to BEC Union after all the low down dirty tricks they did to caused the my party to lose the General Election. I sincerely hope that the Potcake stick it to them.
