FREEPORT – The woman who drowned when her vehicle went into a canal has been officially identified as 25-year-old Indira Carey.
Carey, a resident of Hudson Estates, Freeport, was driving a red Ford Explorer on Sunday when it went in waters at Running Mon Marina.
Police received a report that a vehicle went in the canal and that two persons were trapped inside.
A female passenger, who was also in the vehicle with Carey at the time, managed to escape.
Carey’s body was retrieved from the vehicle around 3am. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police are also investigating a traffic accident that occurred on East Sunrise Highway in the Chesapeake Subdivision.
Inspector Terecita Pinder said the accident involved a red 2001 Pontiac Sunfire that was travelling east on Sunrise Highway.
The driver attempted to overtake another vehicle, but lost control and overturned in the bushes.
Ms Pinder said the driver escaped without injuries.
“Police are again appealing to the general public to drive with due care and attention and to adhere to the laws that govern our streets.
“The public is also reminded that driving without due care and attention is an offence and road users in breach of committing these offences will be dealt with in full accordance to the law,” Ms Pinder said.
