Reader's views on the BEC standoff

BEC Chairman Leslie Miller

AS the BEC/government standoff continues to escalate, Tribune readers are expressing their support of the corporation’s chairman, Leslie Miller.

Mr Miller has refused to bow to the demands of workers taking industrial action over the dismissal of a colleague, warning that anyone who doesn’t return to work will be replaced.

“I will not allow 600 people to run this corporation or to run this country. This corporation is owned by the people of the Bahamas, not some union members who believe they run this corporation, it will not happen as long as I’m here,” Mr Miller said.

Commenting on www.tribune242.com, “Tarzan” said: “I pray for Mr Miller, who is trying to do the right thing. The only real solution will be to privatise the power company, so it is no longer just a political football, but right now that is a bridge too far.

“Mr Miller is doing a superhuman and thankless job of trying to seize control of this critical engine of national infrastructure which has been exploited for the benefit of a few for far too long. He deserves our total support.”

“Proudloudandfnm” said: “Leslie needs to fire every single one that walked off! If he does that, I’d vote for him to be PM next election!

“Time to stop these ignorant unions from holding us hostage. Someone got fired, so what? Union gonna turn off our power now? If they do I hope someone goes to jail!”

“Ironvelvet” said: “Let’s go Leslie Miller! I’m a big FNM, but right is right. I’m on Miller’s side. Get ‘em.

“Fire these people and get people in there who want to work. . . Don’t worry about the support of the union, you have the support of the Bahamian people, the true bosses of BEC – and we say to fire them!”

“Bismark” said: Mr Miller deserves our support for having the courage to do what every other chairman failed to do – fire their backsides.”

Those persons who support Mr. Miller, doesn't have the slightest idea what's going on. I am a strong PLP and I am regretting the day he was voted in. It looks as if the D.P.M or the Prime Minister can't control him.

......The workers are just tired of the bulling around they received from him and it's time to take a stand.. You all talking about firing the employees. Haaa how about firing Mr. Miller. The only reason why the 2 employees who were suspended and fired was because they took a stand against Mr. Miller. He thought he was sooo powerful that no1 suppose to stand up against him.

......If you all have a relative working @ BEC, you will feel their pain.. Mr. Miller also has a problem with the worker's salary, it's like he wants to get richer and leave everyone else behind. So before you all support Mr. Miller, just hear what the workers have to say.

Granted while neither Leslie or Shane are even looked upon by most PLP's as poster boys for PM Chrsitie's chances at governing success, still let's not let the spring time in the air across we Bahamaland, tempt the seven red shirts still left sitt'in in the House to expect any worker, unionized or not, to seriously take to their "new concept" of actually caring about workers, unionized on not?

Oh yes, while their powerful media friends can be trusted to help them play out their all-of-a-sudden pretend concerns over pressing labour issues this government will certainly be facing over the next four years, still I have to believe that the vast majority of workers will not take the seven red shirt opposition members left sitt'in in the House of Assembly's new fondness for workers, any more seriously than their attempting to wash away their previous sins against workers.

Comrades can you seven really think that all you seven have to do, to win power back in 2017, is for you to all run down to the store and buy yourselves seven bars of Irish Spring "labour" brand soap. Really, how foolish of you seven to expect to turn common place labour unrest into some type of a red shirts engineered Bahamaland's own Arab Spring's revolt by the workers against the Christie government?

I'm sorry, you can't so quickly, and within under a year of you're backsides just being kicked out of office, expect you can simply wash away your many sins against the forty-thousand workers, you left stranded who had to go for years without regular paycheques, during your regime's hold onto power from 2007 to 2012?

Why is it only now that you wicked red shirts seem to have everything the people need, yet had nothing for the forty-thousand Bahamians that went without regular paychecks under your heartless regime?

Not so fast you seven House red shirts?

When the PLP was in opposition they were calling for the unions to strike for their rights. Now deal with them.

He does not lead by example. He is out trying to victimize someone for leaking his bill but he should have stepped up and said you know what me being the chairman this should not be my bill. Why is it that he has YET to pay that from what I understand. He should have fought fire with fire and facebook the pic of the bill paid and a zero balance. The idle threats about locking up 600 persons is a bunch a bull.. HE OR NO ONE ELSE in this country have the balls for that. Those 600 person have 6000 people in their families or more... The PLP would open a can that they would assistance to close after that. He need to sit small with that threat... him and Shane... Clearly the young lady was a good employee because very rare you see others willing to march for someone who was disgusting and a troublemaker.. all the things surrounding her should be considered

When u have chief executive chairman picking on the gardeners, maids and labourers this means he cannot deal with executive managers and supervisors who delegate work loads to the line staff.

Don't be fool public a cut in. overtime and insurance for workers will not bring down your light bill.what mr miller is afraid to deal with is that high fuel bill of $500million paid to focal every year find out who are the owners behind this oil company and you will see why he likes messing with the small workers rather than dealing with the big men who owns this company you will be shocked.
