Basketball development camp this summer

DEXTER Cambridge said he wasn’t all that impressed with the performances at the recent Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic. So he is spearheading a basketball development camp over the summer.

Cambridge, who will be joined by national team member Michael “Chicken” Wilson and national female players Antoinette Knowles and Janice Williams, is scheduled to hold the camp 9am to 1pm July 8-19 at the AF Adderley Gym for interested players from pre- kindergarten to senior high school.

“It’s going to be a development camp, teaching the basic fundamentals of basketball,” said Cambridge, who is currently in school in Texas where he is completing his undergraduate studies. “We will also be taking them through the concept of team work.”

As a former physical education teacher and coach at both Jordan Prince Williams and Dame Doris Johnson high schools, Cambridge said he has noticed how the young players are lacking a lot of the skills and so he has teamed up with Wilson, Williams and Knowles to provide an avenue for those interested in learning.

“It’s needed in the country,” Cambridge said. “I saw the Hugh Campbell and a lot of people in the country are talking about the development of basketball, but nothing is happening,” he said. “So we want to start our first developmental camp in Nassau. Eventually, we want to take it to the other islands like Eleuthera in the future.”

Campers will go through a variety of passing, shooting, dribbling, one-on-one or man-to-man defense, team defense and teamwork.

Registration forms will be distributed to all of the schools in the next few weeks, but persons interested in getting more information can contact Cambridge at 552-3907 or 225-1359. “It’s going to be a really exciting camp,” Cambridge said. “So we want to encourage as many players who are interested in developing their game to come out and participate.”
