BAHAMAS Faith Ministries yesterday honoured four outstanding legal professionals for their contributions to Bahamian society.
During its third annual Law and Legal Profession Day, Pastor Myles Munroe and the BFM committee presented awards to Godfrey Kelly, CMG; Retired Supreme Court Justice Rubie Nottage; Dr Peter Maynard; and the late Paul Adderley.
Organiser of the event Merrit Storr, said the church organises the event to recognise not only the importance of the law of the Lord, but also the law of the land.
He said: “I know this day is a bit unusual, but anyone who had followed the teaching focus of Dr Myles Munroe over the last 10 plus years knows that the Kingdom of God has been his focus and he has taught us that God’s Kingdom is like a country and it has a number of characteristics, one of which is the importance of the rule of law.
“God’s law is supreme, like the country’s Constitution is supreme.
“As a result we have set aside this day to emphasise the importance of the rule of law and to recognise persons who have made tremendous contributions to the legal fraternity in our country and for supporting the concept of the supremacy of the rule of law.”
Peter Maynard, president of the Bahamas Bar Association, said he got into law to advocate for good causes and justice.
“By helping others protect their legal rights, I continue to the best of my ability to contribute to the building of a just and fair Bahamas. And so, I get my satisfaction from the opportunity from public service mostly home but also internationally. It is my turn to teach and help others about justice and to reach their full potential.”
Retired Supreme Court Justice Rubie Nottage thanked God for her many accomplishments and said she could not have done anything without her family – especially her husband, former MP Kendal Nottage.
Godfrey Kelly said he was honoured to have received the award, his first honour from a church.
Lilith Adderley accepted the award on behalf of her late husband.
Dr Myles Munroe said Mr Adderley was one of the founding fathers of the country and his legacy “cannot be forgotten or ignored”.
