A LOCAL school was yesterday awarded a top environmental honour – a Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation green flag – in recognition for its commitment to preserving the environment.
St Andrew’s School was recognised by BREEF during a special assembly to close out their Earth Day festivities.
To be awarded the first green flag in New Providence, students, staff and parents of St Andrew’s completed a series of initiatives ranging from installing more recycling and compost bins, to planting native trees and gardens on the school grounds.
Officials at the school also plan to install a solar panel to draw attention renewable energy methods.
Speaking to The Tribune yesterday, Luke Carey, middle school Eco Club president, said he was happy to play a part in the school’s achievement.
“We’ve just gotten the green flag,” Luke said, “which is a national award that we received from BREEF and it shows that we are environmentally friendly.”
