Jill Gandza, 55, and Ron Gandza, 57.

Ron Gandza, 57, and his 55-year-old wife Jill Gandza were animal activists and avid supporters of the Bahamas’ pot cake population. The couple were struck by a car and killed while walking on Queen’s Highway in George Town Exuma last Thursday.

Ron Gandza died at the scene, while Jill Gandza died at a local clinic.

Inspector Harry Williams from the Traffic Division said yesterday police did not expect that anyone would be charged. He said: “We are past the initial stage of the investigation and at this point no one has been charged and no one is expected to be charged in the immediate future. Our investigations are not complete, so it may change, but at this point we do not expect any charges to be pressed.”

After the accident, rumours began to circulate that couple may have been the victims of a drink driver but Isp Williams said: “It is not true.”

He said: “We have received no information that the person was drunk, we have no indication at this point that was the cause. As far as we know right now, it was an accident, a tragic one that is still under investigation.”

Jill Gandza, a recently retired nurse, helped stray dogs from the Bahamas find homes in Canada. According to Bahamas Humane Society President Kim Aranha, the couple were vacationing at their condo in Exuma, Bahamas, and were supposed to return Friday with more pups.

She said: “They have been great champions of potcakes for a long time - about four to five years. They would also host a yearly party for potcake owners and potcakes in the area. And she did it at her own expense, she never tried to raise any money.”
