THE recent deaths of two men in separate traffic accidents in Nassau and Freeport, have renewed calls from officials for motorists to pay attention to road laws.
On Saturday a 28-year-old man lost his life after an accident at Prince Charles Drive near the entrance to St Augustine’s College Monastery which eyewitnesses described as a “horrific scene.”
He was driving a black Kia SUV with a 19-year-old male in the passenger seat. That victim was later taken to hospital where he is said to be in stable condition.
Police said the SUV and a 2002 grey Nissan Maxima were travelling in the eastern direction when the accident happened at around 8:30 pm.
When EMS personnel arrived at the scene of the accident, the area was shrouded in darkness as an electricity pole had been knocked down as a result of the collision.
The Tribune understands that the driver was still conscious when EMS personnel arrived, despite having received “serious head injuries.” Moments later it was determined that he was in an unresponsive state.
He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Although investigations are in preliminary stages, officers said speed was a factor in the accident. Police have yet to release his identity.
On Sunday morning, another man was killed in a traffic accident on Queen’s Highway Grand Bahama. Both incidents have pushed the traffic fatality count to 35 for the year.
Transport and Aviation officials yesterday said that the current number is unacceptable.
They are reminding motorists to pay attention to other road users and to never drink and drive or exceed the speed limit.
