Training in Texas earns shipyard promotion

FREEPORT – Phillip Duncombe, previously a junior nondestructive technician inspector at the Grand Bahama Shipyard, went to Houston, Texas, for a 40-hour training session in ultrasonic thickness.

The completion of this course has given him level 2 certification, and promoted him to full ranking NDT technician.

“I had the experience of seeing the most updated technology and equipment. I got to learn more about using the machines, and I am now at an elevated level where I can use machinery we have here at the shipyard,” said Phillip.

“By successfully completing level 2 training, I can do a whole lot more than I was able to at level 1, including flow inspections, UT surveys, and signing off on reports. I am most grateful for the opportunity and the experience.”

Phillip is one of the few Bahamians in the Quality Assurance Department at GBS, and a graduate of the ongoing Apprenticeship Training Programme at the shipyard.

“Phillip is a very determined, industrious and inquisitive person. He strives to excel at whatever he does,” said Evan Baumberger, manager of quality assurance at GB Shipyard.

Phillip’s current duties include performing a wide variety of tests and inspections for customers of the shipyard.

“This is the exact result we wish to see out of the apprentice training programme,” said Reuben Byrd, executive VP of operations.

“We support those who wish to excel, and hope they would choose to further their training and ascend through the ranks here at the shipyard.”
