MOST of the Christie Cabinet yesterday visited several churches in commemoration of Fox Hill Day.
Prime Minister Perry Christie praised area MP Fred Mitchell for his efforts to preserve the rich history of Fox Hill, not only for the benefit of constituents, but also the people of the Bahamas as a whole.
He said: “At a certain point, slavery was abolished and when it was abolished the question was whether or not all of the traditions would be continued, so in some instances you would go back to the origin of junkanoo.
“The culture of Fox Hill seems to have been preserved more than any other settlement of slaves of the country. So what distinguishes Fox Hill is that they have found a way to continue through the generations the importance of passing on to children their roots.
“So however it is done – in the form of Biblical messages, in the form of recitations in the form of nursery rhymes and in the form of songs they sing and the skits, it is all intended to pass on the meaning of who they are.”
Celebrations continued with hundreds of Bahamians flocking to the Fox Hill festival last night.
