BAHAMAS Union of Teachers president Belinda Wilson yesterday remained tight-lipped over the decision to withdraw membership of some 4,000 educators from the National Congress of Trade Unions of the Bahamas.
Opting not to comment on what led to the BUTs move to “observer status”, Mrs Wilson dismissed speculation over whether the decision was influenced by her failed bid for leadership of the NCTUB last month.
The pull-out has dealt a “blow” to the NCTUB, according to president-elect John Pinder, in statements made last week.
Mrs Wilson said: “I have no comment to that, to any of it. I will not go down that road. I can confirm to you that the Bahamas Union of Teachers is no longer a member, we now have observer status, and we are still affiliated within that capacity.
“This means our members, we don’t have voting rights and do not pay dues.”
The BUT has held membership with the NCTUB since the umbrella union’s formation in 1995, according to Mrs Wilson.
