THE Department of Marine Resources has issued a reminder to the public that the Nassau Grouper closed season began on December 1 and does not end until February 28, 2014.
A ministry statement also noted that the waters surrounding High Cay, off the coast of Central Andros, have been designated a Protected Area during the closed season.
The statement pointed out that anyone found fishing for Nassau Grouper during the closed season will face a $5,000 fine or imprisonment for a year.
Similar penalties can be meted out to any person found fishing in the Protected Area around High Cay.
“The Department of Marine Resources once again requests the support and co-operation of all fishermen and the general public in this regard,” the statement said.
