Nation's relationship with Netherlands highlighted

THE Bahamas and the Netherlands have enjoyed a long-standing and cordial relationship since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1974.

Greeting the new Dutch ambassador to the Bahamas, Governor General Sir Arthur Foulkes point out that the relationship actually goes back much farther – all the way to 1695, when the Bahamas’ capital was renamed Nassau in honour of William III from the Dutch house of Orange-Nassau.

“In this light, it is evident that much could be realised by both our countries to consolidate and take our bilateral relations to new heights in a manner that is of mutual benefit,” Sir Arthur told Ambassador Rudolf Simon Bekink.

“This relationship can provide opportunities for expanded technical co-operation, for diversification of trade, and for financial services and other investment initiatives in the Bahamas to our mutual benefit.”

The Governor General noted that Ambassador Bekink is Permanent Observer for the Netherlands to the Organisation of American States, and in that regard, Sir Arthur thanked his government for continued cooperation and solidarity in multilateral affairs.

“Relations between the Bahamas and the Netherlands have strengthened due to our shared values of peace, human rights, democracy and also our concerns regarding climate change,” Sir Arthur said.

“As a small developing archipelagic state we are acutely aware of the importance of the fight to overcome environmental challenges.”

The relationship between the two countries in the sphere of multilateralism was most recently reaffirmed with the conclusion of a reciprocal agreement to support the candidature of the Bahamas and the Netherlands to secure seats on the Council of the International Maritime Organisation, Sir Arthur said.

“This support not only solidifies the relationship but is a testimony to our maritime links,” he said.

Sir Arthur said that he is confident that the Ambassador’s assignment to the Bahamas will be an “impetus” to broaden and deepen the relationship between our countries.

“Please be assured of my support and that of my 0ffice wherever possible as you pursue these objectives,” Sir Arthur said.

“Please convey my personal regards and best wishes, as well as those of the Government and people of the Bahamas for the continued peace and prosperity of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander, the royal family and the government and people of the Netherlands.”
