Walking in Unity

GOVERNOR General Sir Arthur Foulkes, Prime Minister Perry Christie, opposition Leader Hubert Minnis, and other government officials were on hand yesterday to officially announce One Bahamas’s “Unity Walk”, set to take place at 6.30am on Saturday, February 23.

Sir Arthur gave brief remarks at yesterday’s event, where he acknowledged although “it is true that we have problems, it is also true that we have some wonderful things to celebrate in our Bahamas.”

He said: “I have seen talented young people from Abaco down to Inagua... I have seen some of the schools that we like to berate so much turning out first class students who do well in international institutions of higher learning and our culture is as rich as it ever was and young Bahamians seem to be rediscovering that culture, and for that I am very glad.”

The walk aims to promote unity, peace, and friendship across the county, according to event organisers.

According to the One Bahamas official website, the organisation was formed in 1992 by the then Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Algernon Allen.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the programme, and coincides with the 40th anniversary of independence.

Its purpose is to “generate a greater sense of identity, pride and community among Bahamian youth”.

The walk will begin at Arawak Cay and end at the roundabout by the Sheraton Hotel. Part of the proceeds will benefit various youth organisations and registration is $15.
