TEN FEMALE SINGERS performed live, but only five advanced past the two hour American Idol “Sudden Death” episode last Wednesday. Judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson had their strict judging caps, sending a few good singers home to secure spots for the best singers. The judges were forced to make a few tough calls. Five out of ten men were also sent home last week, ahead of the new Idol elimination process.
The top 40 contestants will perform over the course of four nights, February 27-28. Five contestant will move forward each night, and by the end of week, only the top 10 men and top 10 women will remain. The five girls to advance so far are Angela Miller, Kree Harrison, Adriana Latonio, Tenna Torres and Amber Holcomb. Isabelle Parell, Kamaria Ousley, Shubha Vedula, Brandy Hotard and Jenny Beth Willis were sent home. Veiwers may remember the performance by Tenna. She stood on stage wearing a fitted navy blue dress, and delivered Natasha Bedingfield’s “Soulmate.” Keith told her he liked the diversity in her voice, and complimented her on the song choice. Even though Nicki told her to lose the hairstyle, as it made her look aged, she also told her that she had full control of the song she sang. The fan favourite Angela Miller showed once again that she entered the competition for one reason and one reason alone: to win. Singing Jessie J’s “Nobody’s Perfect” Angela received high praise from the judges.
“This girl is the real deal right here America. She’s going places,” said Rand. “I feel like your potential is just limitless. You had me clothed in goosebumps and bathed in tears,” said Mariah. The top five men to survive the sudden death eliminations were Elijah Liu, Curtis Finch Jr, Devin Velez, Paul Jolley and Charlie Askew. One of the most talked about contestants after the show was Curtis Finch. He sang “Superstar”, which everyone agreed was fitting.
Keith told him: “Preach on brother Curtis, I feel thoroughly cleansed of my sins and I thought that was really beautiful. There were parts for me that were over performed, but your voice is beautiful and I would love to hear more of it.” Nicki added: “Every time you step on stage, you take the competition to another level. You raise the bar every time and the other contestants are just waiting to see what you are going to do. Darling you are well on your way; you’re ready, you’re poised, it’s your time.” This week, the remaining 20 contestants will sing in the final sudden death episodes in hopes of landing one of the top 5 spots.
