THE Bahamas Christian Council and the Save Our Bahamas Vote No Campaign have sent a letter to Minister of National Security Bernard Nottage objecting to the wording of the web shop gambling question.
The Christian Council believes the word “regulation” should not be used, as this implies gambling is already legal.
“We are of the view that the correct and transparent word that should be used in its stead is the word ‘legalisation.’ Hence, the question that should be asked of the Bahamian people is: Do you support the legalisation and taxation of web shop gaming?” said council president Ranford Patterson in a statement.
The Christian Council asked why, if regulation of web shops is all that is needed, does the government even need to put the matter to a referendum before making the appropriate changes.
Rev Patterson added that the council believes the web shop gambling question is currently worded in favour of a “yes” vote.
“As currently worded, some Bahamians who wish to vote ‘no’ to the legalisation of web shop gambling might feel forced to vote for ‘yes’ for its regulation in fear that a no vote would mean that the government will leave web shops to continue operating as they currently are. The word ‘regulation’ confuses the issue,” the statement said.
Whether or not web shop gambling should be legal is the real, fundamental issue at stake in the referendum, according to the council.
“Bearing the foregoing in mind, we have asked in our letter to Dr Nottage, that in the interest of a transparent and clearly worded web shop gambling question, the word ‘regulation’ be substituted with the word ‘legalisation,” said a council spokespeson yesterday.
“We have indicated to Dr Nottage that we look forward to him and his government agreeing to this single word change that more honestly, clearly and correctly puts the web shop gambling question to the Bahamian people.
“As time is of the essence, we also indicated that we would be grateful to receive a formal confirmation of the change from Dr Nottage at his earliest convenience.”
While they await Dr Nottage’s response, the Christian Council called on all “right thinking, fair minded Bahamians” to join them in their call to have the web shop question amended.

Comrade Pastors with precious little talk with Bahamians by this government on they "thing," this alleged offices leasing affair may be about as close as PM Christie and his cabinet have come to actually being forced by the vote "NO" side into interaction with the "public" before legalizing the numbers "Bosses" thing?
And, Comrades if there is one thing most Bahamians done knows it is that the last thing on the minds of PLP's would be to talk honestly and directly with Bahamians about the planned vote on January 28, 2013.
I consider myself being somewhat intelligent but even to me head the web shop question is confusing, leading me to believe that it wast clearly and deliberately designed by the PLP hired guns consultants to cause voter confusion, boarding on political trickery?
Oh yes, PM Christie and your cabinet colleagues say that you have not "one" horse in the race. Truth is that you got a full line-up stable of PLP ponies riding and kicking and a whipping the "Vote YES" side to the finish line.
PM best you listen cause this ain't going be no photo finish race. You and your cabinet should be ashamed and stop this chaos now, before it does to your PLP party what the referendum did to your former law partner Hubert and he red shirts party back in 2002, when likewise Bahamians will soundly reject your "thing' come January 28, 2013?
PM you talked so sweet during the 2012 General Elections about changing the bad ways of the PLP to get re trusted with the powerful instruments of Bahamaland's government of the day? And, now here you and your PLP cabinet colleagues got's the balls to-do this to Bahamaland's God-fearing Bahamians?
PM might I respectfully remind you that on the day you so proudly went before Bahamland to present your government's first bunch of newly appointed cabinet ministers, following in the footsteps your PLP party's decisive 2012 victory, there was no mention to Bahamians that they could expect to see the hands of the numbers "Bosses" on the decision making wheels of Bahamaland's government?
