BASKETBALL

NPBA RESULTS

THE New Providence Basketball Association resumed its regular season play at the CI Gibson Gym over the weekend after taking a break for the Christmas holiday.

In Saturday’s feature contest, the Commonwealth Bank Giants routed the PJ Stingers 113-95 as Gamaliel Rose led a balanced scoring attack with 27 points and nine rebounds. Jeffery Henfield and Rashad Gardiner both contributed 20 points, Jackson Jacob had 19 and Michael Bain chipped in with 17 points.

For the losers, Bathlette LaFleur also had 27 points, Kevin Wright and Jervon Atkins both had 10 and Jason Mitchell finished with 10.

The opening game saw the Woodside Petroleum Conquerors hold off the Y-Care Wreckers 94-94 as Tyrell Griffin had a game high 26 points. Able Joseph and Christoff Stuart both had 20 and Ival Nixon helped out with 12.

For the Wreckers, Leon Bain had 25 points. Kevin Armstrong had 24 points and 11 rebounds and both Dencil Knowles and Anthony Whylly had 13 points. Knowles also pulled down 11 rebounds.

On Friday night, the PF Rockets knocked off the Cleaners 98-96 as Adorn Charlow scored 29 points with a game high 25 rebounds. Tameko Moxey helped out with 15. Jervon Adderley and Kramer Taylor both had 14. Rashad McKenzie added 10.

In a losing effort, Lenny Oscar had a game high 37 points. Cruz Simon added 29 points with 12 rebounds.

The league is slated to be back in action tonight with a double header at the CI Gibson Gym.

THE New Providence Volleyball Association’s Best of

sports inbrief

the Best Volleyball Tournament, held in memory of the late Tom ‘the Bird’ Grant, came to a close at the DW Davis Gym.

In the women’s championship game, Code Red, coached by Jenny Dotson, came from behind to pull off the victory with a 18-25, 26-28, 25-16, 25-22 and 18-16 over the Jammers, coached by Joe Smith. Rochell Henfield was named the most valuable player after she posted three kills, five aces, eight digs and 10 receptions. Tia Charlow led the Jammers with 19 overall points.

In the men’s series, the Men in Black, coached by DeVince Smith, prevailed with a 24-26, 25-15, 25-23 and 25-23 win over the Rascals, coached by Kurtwood Greene Sr. Dellan Brown finished with 16 points to win the MVP. For the Rascals, Kurtwood Greene Jr also had with 16 points.

The NPVA resumed its regular season on Sunday after taking the Christmas holiday break and will be back in action on Wednesday with another double header, starting at 7:30pm at the DW Davis Gym.

ROAD RACE

BSC ROAD RACE

THE Baptist Sports Council is scheduled to hold its 2013 Family Fun Run/Walk Race, starting at 6am from the Charles W Saunders High School, Jean Street, on Saturday, January 26,

The event is geared up for competition in the under-15, under-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50-and-over categories in both the male and female divisions in the walk and run. The event is open to the general public for a registration fee. Trophies are being awarded to the first three finishers in each category.

BSC CLASSIC

THE Baptist Sports Council is slated to hold a meeting 10am Saturday, January 26 at the Charles W Saunders High School, Jean Street, for all churches interested in participating in the 2013 Basketball League.

The league will cater to the 15-and-under, 19-and-under, men’s and women’s divisions. The league is expected to start in February at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex following the completion of the Hugh Campbell Basketball Classic.
