Canon Tynes celebrates 25th anniversary of ordination

MEMBERS of the Parish of St Barnabas Church, along with Anglicans from around the diocese, will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ordination to the priesthood of Canon Basil Leon Tynes with a Solemn High Mass on Friday January 25 at 7pm.

Canon Tynes, born to Aidan and Rodella Tynes, began his early education at St Anne’s Primary School and Queen’s College here in New Providence.

He completed his tertiary education at Meisterschaft College and the University of Toronto in Canada.

In 1980 he entered Codrington Theological College, taking a degree in Theology in 1983 and a Masters Degree in Sacred Theology from the University of McGill, Montreal, Canada.

Canon Tynes was ordained a Deacon at Holy Trinity Church on January 19, 1987 and one year later, on January 25, 1988, he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Michael Eldon in Christ Church Cathedral

Over the years, Canon Tynes has served as Assistant Curate at the Parish of the Most Holy Trinity, New Providence; Chaplin and family life teacher at St John’s College; Parish Priest at St Peter’s Parish, North Long Island, and St Christopher’s, Rum Cay; part time religious studies teacher, North Long Island High; Rural Dean of the Southern Bahamas; Rector of St George’s, New Providence; Canon Missioner for the Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands; Chairman of the Commission on Mission, Renewal, and Ministry and now Rector of St Barnabas Parish, New Providence.

In addition to his pastoral, civic and international duties, Canon Tynes is a published author of many religious books including: Taking the First Few Steps, A Marriage Preparation Series; Re-Affirming our Anglican Heritage; Laying a Solid Foundation; A Firm Faith – A Confirmation Guide; Training Manual for Chalice Bearers, Lay Readers, and Catechists; and is presently working on his seventh book, From Struggle to Victory, A Lay Person’s Guide to Understanding The Revelation to St John”.

Canon Tynes is married to the former Sonia LaVonne and they have two sons , Benjavarae, 21, and Christos, 10 years.

In addition to the celebrations being held on the date of Canon’s Tyne’s ordination, a service of thanksgiving will take place on Sunday, February 3 at 9am at St Barnabas Church followed by a luncheon in honour of Canon Tynes at the Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort in Cable Beach.
