THE Big Red Machine senior boys got a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures as they steamrolled past the visiting Jordan Prince Williams Falcons at St Augustine’s College yesterday.

Track star Xavier Coakley scored 18, Kwasi Dames had 17, swingman Davon Adderley had 12 and Grekeem Cartwright contributed 10 as SAC blew out Jordan Prince Williams 73-46. Donovan Pickering chipped in with eight in the win as the Big Red Machine improved to 8-2.

“It was all right. It was kind of easy,” said SAC’s coach Jason Edwards. “I wasn’t really worried about the other team we were playing, I just wanted to see if we could execute our game a little more.”

Based on what he saw, Edwards said if they can “tighten up on our zone defense and close the gap so that teams don’t just score down the middle on us” and they can put more emphasis on their “press breaker,” he’s confident that they can stand a good chance of going all the way in the playoffs when they start next month.

The Big Red Machine looked shaky at times, but they had such a comfortable lead that any flaws in their game was not exploited by the Falcons.

After taking a close 19-16 lead at the end of the first quarter, SAC raced out to a 40-29 margin at the half. By the time they reached the end of the third, they were in control 55-32.

SAC is hoping to use their performance to prepare for their biggest challenge during the regular season. They have a much anticipated match-up with the undefeated Queen’s College Comets, which is tentatively set for 4pm today at St Augustine’s College.

“This should really prove where we are going into the playoffs,” Edwards said.

With the loss, Jordan Prince Williams maybe out of the playoff picture.

Coached by Andre ‘Star’ Wood, the Falcons couldn’t find any answer to St Augustine’s College’s swamping defense or their potent offense until the fourth quarter. But as the Falcons slowly chipped away at the lead, the Big Red Machine managed to regain their composure and made another surge.

Even when Edwards went deep into his Big Red Machine’s bench, Wood and his Falcons were unable to stop the bleeding. Every time Jordan Prince Williams made a run, St Augustine’s College responded and they managed to stay one shot ahead of their rivals.

Cameron Chevy led the attack for Jordan Prince Williams with nine. Waymond Demeritte had eight, Sirrano Smith seven and Donovan Gray helped out with six.
