BASEBALL: BBF CONGRATS WINNERS

BAHAMAS Baseball Federation president Craig “Salty” Kemp and his executive committee extended congratulations to the winners and all of the participants of the federation’s recent 11th Andre Rodgers National Baseball Championship in Grand Bahama.

The event had a total of 37 teams participating, which made it the largest hosted in its 11-year history. The six divisional winners were:

Coach Pitch Division – Grand Bahama Little League

BBF Minor 9-10 Division – Junior Baseball League of Nassau

BBF Major 11-12 Division – Grand Bahama Little League

BBF Junior 13-15 Division – Junior Baseball League of Nassau

SOFTBALL: BANKERS LEAGUE

THE Bankers League continued its softball regular season in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex on Saturday. The following results were posted:

Player of the game was Javier Bowe, who went 4-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 5 runs batted in.

The player of the game was Levan Cox, who was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and 5 RBI.

The players of the game were Hector Rolle, who was 3-for-3 with 1 run scored and 3 RBI and 1 Home Run and Doyle Rolle, who was 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI.

CYCLING: NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

THE Bahamas Amateur Cycling Federation will celebrate the Bahamas 40th anniversary by hosting their 40th Independence National Road Cycling Championships on Sunday. The federation is set to host the road race starting from the Clifton Heritage parking lot at 7am.

The event will feature various age groups covering various distances. The top male and female will be crowned the national champions. The event is expected to feature competitors from New Providence, Grand Bahama and Eleuthera. This year’s sponsor is Cycles Unlimited.

Trophies and medals will be provided to the top finishers in each category. Cyclists will also get a chance to qualify for the Bahamas national teams that will compete at the Central American and Caribbean Games and the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

CYCLING: BSC CLASSIC

THE Baptist Sports Council will join in the independence celebrations by holding its 2013 Cycling Classic at the One-Mile National Cycling Track at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex on Saturday, July 6. The classic will be designed for boys and girls in the 5-and-under, 10-and-under, 15-and-under, 19-and-under, open and masters categories.

There is a registration fee with the exception of the 5-and-under and 10-and-under,which will be entered free of charge. Interested churches are urged to contact Brent Stubbs at stubbobs@gmail.com or call 502-23637.

BOXING: CHAMPION AMATEUR SHOW

Champion Amateur Boxing Club is scheduled to host its Amateur Boxing Fever at the Wulff Road Boxing Square, starting at 6pm on Saturday. Awards will be presented for the best fight, most outstanding boxer and most improved boxer. All amateur boxing clubs are welcome to participate. Champion Amateur Boxing Club also announces plans for its annual summer camp that is slated to begin today and run though Friday, August 9. Two daily sessions will take place - 9am to noon and noon to 3pm.

TENNIS: JR NATIONALS

THE Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association’s Junior National Tennis Championships is underway at the National Tennis Centre until July 3.

According to BLTA first vice president Bradley Bain, the event serves as the trials for the players wishing to compete in the HITIC Tournament in August.

“For the kids who are playing in those events, it’s a big event for them,” Bain said. “They will represent the Bahamas in a big event. All of the other Caribbean countries send their best to this event. We have done fairly well in the past and we are looking forward to sending a very good team this year. The kids have been working hard and they are looking forward to it.”

TENNIS: ITF JUNKANOO BOWL

THE Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association will host the Junkanoo Bowl Tournament for junior players at the National Tennis Centre July 8-13. The qualifying round of 32 players is scheduled to take place July 5-6.

Players will get to participate in the under-18 boys and girls singles and doubles.

“The Bahamas will probably have about four boys who will be ranked in the top eight,” according to Bradley Bain, first vice president of the BLTA. “For the girls, there is a possibility that we may have Danielle Thompson playing as our seeded player.”

At present, Thompson is ranked at No. 510 on the ITF world list.

Shequille Taylor, ranked at 382, is the top Bahamian male player, Kevin Major, who just recently played as the No.1 seeded player on the Bahamas Davis Cup team, is 394, Christian Cargill at 413, Philip Major (who is nursing a season ending foot injury) is 459 and Rasheed Carey, who may move up to replace Major, is at 559.

“We’re looking for some very good performances from our boys in both singles and doubles,” Bain said.

For the under-24 division, the players will be participating in the COTEC Tournament. The Bahamas, Jamaica, Curacao and Costa Rica are expected to make up the field. Oneil Mortimer is expected to lead the way for the Bahamas on the boys’ side and Bain anticipates that he will go deep into the draw.
