Five blazes in one day in New Providence

FIRE services responded to five incidents on New Providence yesterday, according to Fire chief Walter Evans.

Mr Evans said there was two structural fires, one bush fire, and one false alarm through the day - and late reports reaching The Tribune last night indicated there were structural fires affecting three buildings on Blake Road, near Caves Village.

The first structural fire was at a building near the British Colonial Hilton, and was believed to have been caused by an electrical shortage.

The second fire was at a building on Wulff Road and Market Street. Mr Evans said the fire started in a rubbish heap inside the building. However, fire workers were able to extinguish the flames before it ignited the building.

The first fire started shortly after 5pm, and fire services were alerted to the second one 30 minutes later, according to Mr Evans, who said that two fire trucks responded to each incident.

According to fire chief Walter Evans, the fires were reported sometime around 8pm. Investigations into the fires are continuing.
