THE Water and Sewage corporation will periodically interrupt water services for residents of New Providence until further notice according to Visna Armbrister, customer service manager.
The water rationing exercises are taking place nightly between 10pm and 5am in an effort to conserve water for periods of peak usage.
Ms Armbrister’s statements come as Bahamians complained about the lack of access to water at night, some saying they were unaware of the corporation’s decision to interrupt water services.
“I work late and can’t bathe at night when I come home from a hard day of work,” said one man who spoke to The Tribune.
Ms Armbrister said: “We are not targeting any one specific area. We are conducting water conservation methods throughout the island. Our water and supply is not where it needs to be so this has to happen because the quantity of water in the supply is very low. We hope most families would’ve gotten to do what they need to do in terms of cleaning up by the time we disconnect the supplies.”
She said: “We’ve had to implement the conservation methods off and on for about two months. We are actively working on resolving the matter and hope to have it resolved in short order.”
In 2011, the Baillou Hills deasalination plant was expanded to allow for the purification of an additional 4.0 million imperial gallons of water per day. The plant replaced the old practice of importing water from Andros, which produced just around 2.7 million imperial gallons of water per day.
At the time, a representative of the Water and Sewage Corporation said the expansion project would “translate into an improved, more reliable water supply system for our New Providence customers.”
