ATLANTIS Resort is hosting the Island Explosion Art Show featuring the work of young aspiring artists.

Artwork in the competition will pay tribute to the islands of the Bahamas in the run-up to the 40th Anniversary of Independence.

Participants are being asked to highlight a particular island or culture in the Bahamas in their art pieces.

The competition is open to all youngsters between the ages of 15 and 18.
The top 30 pieces will be showcased on July 13 from 6 to 9pm in the caf at the great hall of waters, in Royal Towers Atlantis. The top three pieces will be there and an overall winner will be announced during the event.
Morgan Fraser, organiser of the art show, said:”Since most of the population is living on Nassau, we often forget that there is so much culture in the other islands and so much diversity to be celebrated along with the 40 years of independence.
“We wanted to do something to celebrate this very special independence day and we wanted to create something that the local community could be involved in. The art competition is for students and was created in order to allow them a venue to showcase their talents as well as a great event for guests and locals to come.”
Participants are allowed to submit a maximum of two pieces of art which must be their sole work and authentic. The work must also represent the theme of the exhibition.
Ms Fraser said the artists must demonstrate imagination in concept and skilful use of materials. Paintings and drawings must also be properly presented on a canvas, framed and be able to display on an easel. The sizes of the art pieces must also be 12x16 and 22x28.
“Participants can use any medium they like including photography as many have asked us. We are very excited to see the variety of artwork that will be displayed and the level of skill, talent and creativity that we know our young Bahamians have,” Ms Fraser said.
Three local artists will judge the pieces for creativity, use of materials, theme illustration, overall appeal anD skill.
The top three paintings will be displayed in Atlantis until September 6.
Prizes are still being finalised Ms Fraser said, but they include an iPad mini, a three day, two night stay at Atlantis, gift certificates for John Bull, a customised T-shirt with winning artwork from Sun Tee and gift certificates for dinner at Atlantis.
“We really want the winning piece to be something that showcases the theme well and is something that all Bahamians can be proud of,” she said.
Deadline for submission is July 5, at the Atlantis Library, Coral Towers, Reef wing between the hours of 11am and 4pm.
