BAHAMIAN athlete Stephen Newbold has appeared in court and been released after he was arrested following an early morning poolside shooting incident in the US.
Newbold, 18, a quarter-miler and a member of the Bahamas team for next weekend's Carifta Games, was arrested along with fellow Florida State 4x400 relay runner Ronell J Mance.
A police report said that the two were arrested after shots were reported being fired at an off-campus apartment complex in Tallahassee, Florida, at about 3.30pm on Thursday. Police were called.
Both men were charged with resisting arrest without violence.
Newbold was also charged with discharging a firearm in public.
Today, Newbold was in court, according to WCTV, which reported that he posted his $1,000 bond and was released. A judge set bond for Newbold at $500 for each charge.
He's also been required to turn over any firearms in his possession after his release. A public defender will appointed to represent him. Newbold has a case management hearing in April.
On his Twitter site today Newbold said: "They can't keep a good man down! Lol people making it seem like life is over, Im out, Im gucci, back to work."
Ronell J. Mance was not in court. He bonded out yesterday.
Mance has hired a private attorney and his next court date has not been set.

Idiotic tweet from someone who just doesn't get it. Shooting off handguns like a common criminal and thug then saying "you can't keep a good man down...I'm out..." Just shows his further disrespect for the law. IMHO he should not be able to compete.

He is trying to be a thug. He has consistently lied about the gun, the shooting, the id, and on top of all of that, the most he offered up were two imbecilic unrepentant tweets and and not a single apology to his family and friends, his school or his country to be found. He needs to grow up and realize that he's messing with the wrong set of people who can and will end his wannabe thug life early. Someone needs to sit his backside down, and tell him he is making a jackass of himself and embarrassing his country with his behaviour.
It is only appropriate that the BAAA's rescind the offer for him to be a part of the team. It is a matter of integrity and principle over a greedy desire to win at all costs.

It is absolutely heartbreaking to see how Bahamians are ready to condone this young man's behavior. Lets say this young man was Jamaica's Usain Bolt, he would lose ALL sports endorsements, he would not be allowed to participate in any sports events at all. Don't believe me...... ask Oscar Pistorius, the athlete who earlier this year was accused of murder. Should we wait until this young man kills someone before we try to curb his attitude. People, our country is confused, we suffer from the "not my good child" syndrome. Your good child could have killed someone. It seems, as young Mr. Newbold puts it, "Its all GUCCI". Well JAIL is not the end of the world, nor is missing Carifta, we'll have more. Take some time and consider your actions, consider your parents and anyone else who could be hurt as a result of your actions. The reform happens after the penalty. What punishment has he faced thus far..... Missing Carifta is NOT enough. How about he sits out a year. If he truly loves what he does he will train and practice everyday and return ready to show us all that he has grown from this.

Some day we will teach the young ones to take responsibility for the actions.I really hope this young man is banned from all sport activities and not allowed into the USA for a very long time. The USA has enough problems with our foreign guest adding to the problems.
