LABOUR Minister Shane Gibson says executives of BahaMar are “playing hardball” regarding 140 workers who were sacked from the Wyndham Nassau Resort months ago.

Mr Gibson said despite attempts to negotiate, the government had not got officials to change their position on rehiring the workers who claimed they were let go without notice.

Speaking as a guest on a local talk radio show on Wednesday, he said it was not clear whether the workers would get their jobs back or be compensated.

He said: “We expressed our views to them and we have not gotten them to change their position in terms of re-hiring those 140 persons. Our position was that we didn’t see how they could let them go. So the jury is still out and they are playing hard ball.”

In February, 140 long serving workers of Wyndham stormed the grounds of Prime Minister Perry Christie’s office complex along with labour union representatives demanding answers on the terminations. Not long after they took their protests to Rawson Square.

Union representatives said BahaMar had no regard for the union or an agreement that had been signed with government.

BahaMar said then the firings had taken place as Wyndham was restructuring. It had no comment on Mr Gibson’s comments.
