RESIDENTS of an apartment complex in Newbold Street are upset by bags of garbage that have been piling up in the neighbourhood ‘since last year.’
The apartment complex, which has nine tenants, has stacks of bags of garbage in the front of its yard, as our pictures show.
Tenants say the rubbish littering the yard is an unpleasant sight that harbours dogs and insects and potentially puts them at risk.
One tenant, who wished to remain anonymous, said garbage collectors come in the area but do not remove rubbish from their complex because the garbage is not placed in bins.
The tenant said bags of garbage quickly accumulate, forcing the residents to put bags on top of the bins when the bins are full.
She said: “Although the collectors told the tenants not to place the bags on top of the bins, they still put them there because there are so many bags.
“If we put the garbage on the floor, dogs will go there and tear them apart so we put them on a higher level.
“Once the garbage is not in the bin, the collectors don’t carry them. The collectors told us they are not supposed to remove garbage that is not in the bin.”
The Department of Environmental Health Services said it was company policy not to remove bags of garbage that are not within a bin.
A spokesman said: “We are not supposed to remove garbage that is isn’t secured in a bin. We are not even supposed to be collecting garbage from apartment complexes. We do it, but we aren’t supposed to.”
The Tribune was also told the department was ‘unaware’ of this particular problem and that garbage would be removed from the front of the apartment complex within the next week.

I may be wrong but depending on the amount of units to a building wouldn't it be considered a commercial building and not a residential building. Wouldn't the disposal of the garbage be the Landlords responsibility to have a private dumpster in place. Besides that, this picture was taken from the rear of the garbage holding area which only show that the garbage was indeed not package properly for collection. We are into the fifth month of this year, so from last year to now after continuously looking at this mess, you people must be related to Alvin Smith (the human waste observer). It isn't hard to combind forces in hiring a truck to move the rubbish. My goodness, it's in your yard and was put there by you guys, whom know full-well the health risks involved. How could we keep the Bahamas Clean when we cannot even keep our own premises clean. But I must hand it to you. Whilst you guys keep the mess on your own property, my neighbours perfer to throw theirs on the near by forest land.
