SPOTLIGHT
BAHAMIAN players Trae Sweeting and Ian Mayers helped lead Christ School Greenies to victory in the first round of the State Playoffs with a 7-1 victory over No.9 seed Metrolina Christian High School.
The No.8 seed Christ School is slated to meet No.1 seed Charlotte Christian School today in the second round of the NCISAA State Playoffs.
Against Metrolina Christian, Christ School broke the game open with four runs in the 6th inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Trae Sweeting. Camrin Opp pitched the complete game, allowing only one unearned run, while striking out nine batters.
Christ School never trailed in the game and scored their first run in the 2nd inning after Craig Kiley led the inning off with a double. Doug Piercy’s sacrifice fly moved him to 3rd and he scored on the overthrow. The Warriors, who had men on base in every inning, broke through in the 3rd inning as they loaded the bases and scored on a throwing error, but Opp got a fly out to end the inning.
The Greenies answered right back with another run to take the 2-1 lead. In the 3rd, Charles Beale had an infield single, stole 2nd base and later scored on Joe Keeler’s RBI single. Opp was able to get out of the 5th inning with the help of two good defensive plays. The Warriors led off with a double, but Sweeting later caught him off 2nd base as the next batter walked for the first out. Then Beale had to range into short right field for the 2nd out and finally the foul out to Piercy ended the inning without a run.
Sweeting led off the 5th with an infield single and eventually came around to score to increase the lead to 3-1. The Warriors had men on 1st and 2nd with no outs in the 6th before Opp struck out the side to end the threat.
The Greenies then broke the close game open with four runs in the 6th inning. Opp drew a 1-out walk, followed by a Mayers single. Sweeting then blasted a three-run shot over the fence in left field then Beale tripled and later scored on a throwing error.
The Greenies closed out the win with a game ending double play after Opp had walked the first two batters in the 7th inning. Leading hitters were Sweeting (3 for 4, HR, 3 RBI, 2 runs, 3 SB), Beale (2-3, 2 runs), Keeler (2-4, RBI, double), Kiley (2-3, double).
