Working for the lord

THE REWARD a person can receive from the lord for a good deed is greater than any “award” they can receive from a human being.

The Colossians 3:23 scripture states: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the lord, not for human masters”. This bible verse speaks about a person’s everyday life.

Whether on a job, at school, church, home, or any daily encounter, Bahamian Christians said people should remember to do their good deeds for the lord. And if a person knows what they are doing is not pleasing to the lord, then they should not be doing it.

Michelle Bethel told Tribune Religion: “Everything you do, you should do to the honour and glory of God. Do not think that you are doing it for people, take pride in what you do as if God himself asked you to.”

Samara Missick said: “If you are doing a job, do it gladly and do it with reverence to God. When my husband was alive, my pastor would always tell me to let it be known to God that we are working on a marriage for him, and not for people.”

According a Christian website the scripture teaches people what their attitude should be in their work. People often find themselves in positions of authority and submission, in many different forms. However, the scripture applies to all situations, “whatever the relationship, whatever the task, whatever the work.”

Speaking about working heartily for the lord, the website stated: “The original wording for heartily indicates that our work is done with everything we’ve got. All of our soul should be put into it. There should not be any laziness, but putting everything we have into whatever we do,” stated the website.

“The problem in trying to please men is that it is impossible and people are fickle. It’s impossible to make everyone happy all the time, and peoples’ moods and expectations change. Someone in authority might be one way one day and another way the next, which changes what we must do to please them. This becomes tiresome. But Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb. 13:8), so if pleasing him is our priority, we know that working heartily will be rewarded because his expectations will not change,” it stated.

Kayla Clarke said she does not put anyone on a pedestal except God.

“When you start to treat humans like kings and queens, they will look at you like a peasant. We all came from dust and dust is how we will leave this world. When I put my all into something, I always say a prayer and ask God to guide me throughout whatever I am putting my hands on. For it is God that gives me the strength to even be able to get up in the morning to go to work or to school,” said Ms Clarke.

Clarice Saunders said when she works, she works for the lord because he is her ultimate source. She said God is the reason for her employment today.

“It was his divine wisdom and provision that got me on the job that I am on today. With that in mind I do believe it is my duty as a Christian to work diligently as though I am serving him. When we do things with our whole heart he is pleased. Man’s purpose on Earth is to please God and therefore we should strive to please him in all of our ways,” said Ms Saunders.
