FREEPORT – Seventy-one passengers on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship, which is docked at Freeport Harbour, are being accommodated at the Pelican Bay Resort after their cabins were damaged following a fire onboard the ship.
According to reports, the fire began at 2:50am on Monday. Some 2,224 passengers and 794 crew members were aboard at the time. No one was injured as a result of the fire.
Tourism officials went to the harbour to ensure that the passengers were safe and well. About 150 passengers left the ship.
“Some of the passengers that tourism officials spoke with said they were very happy to be safe and that no one was hurt during the incident,” a representative said.
The 71 passengers who were displaced as a result of the incident were taken to the Pelican Bay Resort in Lucaya until arrangements can be made for them to be flown home.
When The Tribune contacted Freeport Ship Services, the local shipping agents for the vessel, an employee said they could not comment on the matter.
The cruise has been cancelled and the more than 2,200 passenger will be flown from the Bahamas back to Baltimore.
