WHILE the government understands America’s concerns over escalating crime in the country – particularly Nassau – Tourism Minister Obie Wilchcombe believes officials should work on perfecting the Bahamas’ brand.
And although Police Commissioner Ellison Greenslade has insisted that gangs are not to blame for recent violence, Mr Wilchcombe said warring factions in the country must be done away with, as the country strives to improve the tourist experience.
He was responding to the latest US Embassy security alert issued last week to citizens living in and travelling to the Bahamas over increased armed robberies. The warning was issued not long after American sailor Kyle Bruner, 34, was murdered during an armed robbery.
He added that it was important to note that there is less crime being committed in the Bahamas than in some US cities.
“They have to do that understanding that in their mandate their first responsibility is their citizens and what’s in America’s best interest. America is always protecting their citizens so we understand.
“I think we don’t worry about that. What we should worry about is not what people say but it’s what we do. Like I always say, I don’t worry about the competition. I let the competition worry about me. Because if I make sure my product is the best product and we are at a level of excellence we are always going to perform higher.
“So if we can get rid of the problems and get our people to come under control (and) get rid of this nonsense that is going on with the warring factions I believe that at the end of the day it will just make sense for everybody.”
The US warning stressed that armed robbery remains a major threat to US citizens in The Bahamas.
“Since the beginning of the year, a number of US citizens have fallen victim to armed robbery with some having been seriously injured in the commission of these crimes,” the statement said.
The latest crime statistics show a 5 per cent increase in armed robberies.

Good news for officials, they do not have to work on perfecting the Bahamas’ brand after all.as the criminals and Greenslade's "non" gangs are Bahamanianizing the brand for them,

"Get people to come under control"? Who's job is that? BJN says its not his, and if the Commissioner is being prevented from even reporting crime stats it can't be his job. Since PGC, BJN, OBW and KB all believe we are doing so well, it may be time for the US to issue a travel advisory to all Bahamians traveling in the Bahamas

Population: USA 315,000,000 Bahamas 350,000. This gives a ratio of 900 to 1. So based on this ratio, 100 homicides per year in the Bahamas would equate to 90,000 homicides in the US. Am I missing something?
