LARGE garbage bins will be placed in “strategic areas” around New Providence for the disposal of items damaged by the recent heavy flooding.
Environment Minister Kenred Dorsett said the Department of Environmental Health Services (DEHS) is in charge of the bins, which will be available from now until next week Thursday.
Although not naming any exact locations, he said the bins are available to augment regular garbage collection.
“This is being done in response to the flooding which occurred within some areas of New Providence last week due to torrential rainfall,” Mr Dorsett explained.
“Persons affected by flooding or generally who may need to dispose of damaged items or large items such as furniture, mattresses, drywall, etcetera, should deposit them in one of the bins provided.
“DEHS will be monitoring the bins to ensure timely collection. The bins will be available for use on May 31, 2013 for the period of one week or until June 6, 2013.”
The Tribune learned one of the bins is reportedly located on the athletic field of the D W Davis jr high school, prompting criticism from one security officer.
The school guard said the field is locked and closed after a certain hour, thus restricting the time that residents are able to ge to the bins.
DEHS is also warning the public about pest control, as the excessive rainfall is favourable for various insect breeding. They note vector control is continuing but asked the public to remove standing water, if possible, and to use repellents.
“The DEHS would also like to remind members of the public that this weather is conducive for the breeding of mosquitoes,” Mr Dorsett said.
“While vector control is ongoing and will continue whenever weather permits, residents should use mosquito repellents and ensure wherever possible that they do not keep standing water uncovered around their homes.
“The DEHS is working assiduously to respond to the issues arising within its purview due to the storm of last week and the continuing inclement weather occurring this week. I will keep the public informed of any further developments and or notices.”

So where are the bins located? And would it have not been better to have big dump trucks go around and collect the destroyed items. Not everyone owns a truck or can afford to hire one!!!
