POLICE say they plan to be out in “full force” over the Halloween weekend in an effort to create a safe environment for trick-or-treators and residents throughout New Providence.
According to police, although most people usually enjoy this occasion peacefully, a small group of troublemakers use Halloween as an excuse to make life miserable for law-abiding citizens.
Typically, this time of year is marked by an increase in criminal activity and vandalism, often of a random or erratic nature.
But the Royal Bahamas Police Force wants to send “a clear message to those who use the night as an excuse for intimidating and anti-social behaviour”, that such behaviour will not be tolerated.
Police are also recommending that parents go over the following safety tips with their children to assure that everyone has a safe and happy Halloween:
• Children should be accompanied by adults at all times
• Never cross the street between parked vehicles
• Never go into a stranger’s house
• Watch out for cars reversing or turning
• Wear bright clothing and use a flashlight
The police also said drivers should keep an eye out for children, who may forget the rules; use caution when driving; and obey posted traffic signs, especially in residential areas.
Parents were reminded that they should ensure their children’s trick-or-treating is confined to the community where they live, and that the route to be taken is clearly planned and agreed upon beforehand.
Children should also be instructed not to open candy until they return home, while parents should inspect all candy for signs of tampering.
Most important, the police said, is that parents explain to their children the difference between tricks and vandalism.
