AN AIR crew from the US Coast Guard helped the Royal Bahamas Defence Force rescue two victims of a small plane crash near Staniel Cay on Sunday.
According to reports, the two men were recovered by a crew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater after the Federal Aviation Administration notified the agency of the twin engine aircraft crash.
Chris Lloyd operations manager at Bahamas Air/Sea Rescue Association (BASRA) said they received a call at around 3pm indicating that an aircraft was down three miles west of Pipe Cay and three miles west northwest of Staniel Cay.
“The two persons on board were okay. RBDF officers went to the site. It seems as though as the plane went down, the persons on board jumped out and someone picked them up. The entire thing was over and done with by 4.15pm. No assistance from us was required and the aircraft was then recovered,” he said.
Officials say they launched a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to located and recover the men who were later brought to the capital.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated.
