IN THE second week of the NCAA Division I basketball season, several Bahamian players continued their impressive showings early in the year.
Kadeem Coleby and the No.16 ranked Shockers continued to plow through the easy part of their schedule and moved to 4-0 with an 85-71 win over the Tennessee State Tigers. He finished with five points and a season high eight rebounds, playing in 22 minutes for the third straight game.
Coleby played just 15 minutes in the season opener but has increased productivity with increased playing time on the floor.
Against Western Kentucky he finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three blocks and against William and Mary he finished with 10 points, including an alley-oop which was featured on ESPN in the game’s highlight reel.
Zane Knowles had a productive three days at the Holiday Inn Downtown Marina Islanders Basketball Tournament. Knowles ended the three-day event with a double double in the Texas A and M Corpus Christi Islanders’ 72-61 win over Texas Pan-American in Southland Conference play Sunday night.
Knowles finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds, his second double double of the season.
On Saturday, he finished with two points and eight rebounds in the Islanders’ 62-60 loss to Tennessee Tech.
In the opening game of the tournament Friday night, the Islanders were on the winning side of a close contest with a 72-71 win over the IPFW Mastodons.
Knowles finished with a near double double - nine points and nine rebounds on 3-7 shooting from the field.
In a head-to-head matchup of Bahamians, Tristian Curtis put up better numbers, but Dwight Coleby’s team came away with the win.
Coleby and the Ole Miss Rebels edged out Curtis and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Saturday night at the HTC Center in Conway, South Carolina.
Coleby played just four minutes with a rebound, while Curtis finished with five points, five rebounds and one block.
The Rebels remained perfect early on at 2-0 while the Chanticleers fell to 1-2.
For the Houston Cougars, Danrad Knowles was finally cleared to play, giving the programme an opportunity to see the Bahamian trio of Knowles, LJ Rose and Mikhail McLean on the floor simultaneously for the first time this weekend.
With an 80-66 win over the Lehigh Mountain Hawks Sunday night, Houston advanced to the semifinals of the Progressive Legends Classic where they are slated to face the Stanford Cardinal on November 25.
In his role as the sixth man, Knowles finished with a team high four blocks, Rose finished with 18 points and six assists, while McLean finished with eight points five rebounds and a blocked shot.
It was the second game for Knowles since he was cleared by the NCAA. In his debut he finished with seven points, five rebounds and two blocks in 19 minutes.
