A defence that forced five turnovers led the V8 Fusion Stingrays to their third win of the season in week five of the Commonwealth American Football League.
The Stingrays defeated the BaOilCo Jets 30-20 at the DW Davis field Saturday to improve to 3-0 on the year. The Jets fell to 0-4.
Stingrays quarterback Eldrith Smith opened the game with a 67-yard touchdown pass to Quincy Smith and on the ensuing possession, Darrell Moss scored on a three-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 lead.
The Stingrays’ defence protected the two touchdown lead by forcing two turnovers as the Jets threatened in the redzone. Anthony Lopez put the Jets on the scoreboard early in the third quarter with a six-yard touchdown run. They trailed 14-8 after a successful two-point conversion.
The Jets would tie the game on their next possession when Philmon Rolle connected with Reggie Knowles for a 43-yard touchdown pass. Tied at 14, the Stingrays would pull ahead when Jamaal Storr recovered a muffed punt return by the Jets and returned it for a 30-yard touchdown.
A successful conversion gave his team a 22-14 lead.
Storr, who finished with 26 carries for 120 yards, controlled the game on the ground for much of the fourth quarter, but it was Smith who capped the scoring drive with a 19-yard run. Smith was also 5-13 through the air with 101 yards and a touchdown.
A successful conversion gave the Stingrays a 30-14 lead. Rolle completed a 39-yard touchdown pass to Jamal Butler for the Jets’ final score of the game. He finished 4-7 for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
Lopez carried the ball 19 times for 94 yards and a touchdown.
The Stingrays are slated to face the Orry J Sands Pros next week.
The Stingrays won the previous matchup between the two clubs in week three, 20-6.
