CONTRACTORS yesterday received mobilisation payments for repairs to 102 homes in New Providence.
Payment for another 102 contracts will be distributed next week, according to Minister of Works Philip Davis, who said the cheques released yesterday were worth a combined $500,000.
Claiming such a powerful social mission had never before been attempted by any government, Urban Renewal co-chair Algernon Allen defended the Small Homes Repair Programme as transparent and free from partisanship.
He added that the Urban Renewal Commission met with FNM Leader Dr Hubert Minnis and FNM MP for St Anne’s Hubert Chipman last month to ensure opposition MPs had equal opportunity to recommend persons they felt could benefit from the programme.
Contractors were encouraged to purchase materials from small local businesses and employ area residents, so that the benefits from the social intervention could trickle down to other sectors of the economy.
Areas included in the first phase of the programme include: Englerston, Southerm Shores, Montagu, Tall Pines and Fox Hill.
