FLIPPING the phrase that former president John F Kennedy made famous, former cruiserweight champion of the Bahamas, Pat “The Centreville Assassin” Strachan, said it’s not all about what the Cat Island Sailing Club can do for him, but rather what he can do for the club.

Strachan was making the assertion during his acceptance speech as the new president of the Cat Island Sailing Club, telling the members that they need to work together for one common goal and to recommit their energies to ensure that the club is restored back to its glory days.

“My vision for the Cat Island Sailing Club is that the club will become more efficient and more effective,” Strachan said. “I will put procedures in place so that the operation of the club is ran smoothly and, in the process, I will build leaders from among the newer and younger members.”

Other members elected to serve with Strachan through 2015 are:

Vice President – Christine D King; treasurer – Andrea Sturrup; assistant treasurer – Ian Rolle; secretary – Lakeisha Wright; assistant secretary – Aliea Rolle; Sargent-At-Arms – Keith Daxon; Chaplain – Venera Russell and public relations officer – Ingrid Romer.

Strachan went on to appoint several chairpersons of committees, including past president Maxwell Burrows as chairman of the race committee, Keith Daxon as chairman of the Sailing Club renovation sub-committee; Christine King as chairperson of the fund-raising committee; past president Sammy Smith and Karen Marsh as co-chairpersons of the ways and means committee and Pauline Romer-Williams as chairperson of the sub-committee for the food preparation.

“Together, we will make the 2014 regatta a success. Together we will make the Cat Island day a success,” Strachan said. “By working together, we will make all of our events a success.”

The goals, as outlined by Strachan, are as follows:

  1. To install air-condition units, repair bathrooms and close up ceiling in the Sailing Club, New Bight, Cat Island

  2. To put infrastructure in place so club will run more smoothly and efficiently

  3. To review constitution and by-laws and make changes

  4. To stage successful regatta in 2014 and 2015
