Lex paddles up for Bahamas at training camp and regatta

LEX Fountain and coach Jason Williams, president of the Bahamas Rowing Association, are representing the Bahamas in the Latin America Youth Training Camp and Regatta in Lake IIopango, El Salvador, San Salvador, October 4-13.

The Bahamas Olympic Committee announced that the Bahamas Rowing Association accepted an invite to participate in the event.

According to a press release, BOC secretary general Romell Knowles indicated how pleased he was to see the formation of rowing, an Olympic sport, in the Bahamas.

“Jason and the executives of the Bahamas Rowing Association ought to be commended for overcoming all the adversity to get the sport of rowing practiced in the Bahamas. Many young Bahamian children skull and enjoy it, particularly in the Family Islands, I’m sure it will be a natural progression to the fine technique associated with rowing,” he said.

“I am aware that there is the formation of the Nassau Rowing Club headed by Kyle Chea who is working tirelessly with the Bahamas Rowing Association to promote and develop the sport of rowing throughout the Bahamas. Already two young talented Bahamian ladies attending university are training very hard with the hope of representing the Bahamas in international competition.”

“Over the coming months young Bahamians can look forward to a number of Olympic sports being introduced for their benefit, one will note the resurgence of sports like wrestling and taekwondo, the recent success of tennis and volleyball and the introduction of new sports like archery, handball, fencing and now rowing to compliment the other Olympic sports being practiced in the Bahamas.

“The president and executives of the Bahamas Olympic Committee are pleased that the Olympic sports practiced in the Bahamas are growing by leaps and bounds and a concerted effort is being made to grow existing sports and introduce new Olympic sports.

“The BOC recently awarded eight member federations with a development grant and will be issuing more development grants in the coming months. We believe that grants as such will help member federations with talent identification and produce future Olympians,” said the release.
