Members of the Coconut Grove Business League (CGBL) have “not abandoned the fight” and will continue to pursue legal action to reverse the once one-way traffic system on Blue Hill Road and Market Street.
Ethric Bowe, the group’s spokesman, told Tribune Business the CGBL was confident it could secure victory in the Supreme Court a second time. “We have not abandoned the fight. We have instructed our lawyer Mr Maurice Glinton to do some things,” Mr Bowe said.
“We have given him clear instructions. There are no impediments on our part. We have given our lawyer very clear instructions on what to do. Some people are starting to wonder. The group is looking for positive movement on this matter.”
The CGBL, a group of some 50 businesses, took their fight to court, and in December 2011 secured a victory in the Supreme Court against the Government over the road changes, only to see that decision overturned by the Court of Appeal.
The CGBL has been lobbying for several years for an end to the system that currently sees traffic go one-way northbound on Blue Hill Road, and one-way southbound on Market Street.
The group was among many which complained that the adoption of this system adversely affected their businesses, with several companies in the area having closed down as in recent years.
“We believe we can win it again in the Supreme Court,” Mr Bowe said. “The information our lawyer gave us initially suggested that if we took it back to the Supreme Court we could win.
“We don’t believe that this Government has the wherewithal to square up against us in the Supreme Court. They will lose and it will be doubly embarrassing. “Right now we have entered a phase of almost permanent mess. There are just some things that are never going to return. The previous government initiated it and this Government buried it by their lack of action.”
