OPPOSITION leader Dr Hubert Minnis is questioning why Prime Minister Perry Christie is acting as National Security Minister in the absence of Dr Bernard Nottage.

The Cabinet office announced on Monday, that Dr Nottage would be in the US to keep a medical appointment. While Dr Nottage visited a physician, the press statement said, Mr Christie would take on the National Security portfolio.

However, the temporary change does not sit well with Dr Minnis who told The Tribune that junior Minister Keith Bell should be acting as National Security chief.

“Is the Prime Minister sending a message that he has no confidence in his State Ministers or is he just pin-pointing that he has not the confidence in Keith Bell,” Dr Minnis asked.

“The Prime Minister has enough trouble and challenges as it is with his own Ministry, which is Finance and the amount of expenditure in addition to their poor budgeting and now he wants to take on another Ministry. National Security is serious business given crime and criminal activity in the country.

“If he is saying that he does not have confidence in Keith Bell, well I suggest that they find something else for him to do.”

Can anyone confirm the following? I remember reading somewhere that the ministers of Finance and National Security have to be elected officials ... is this so or am I mistaken?

Everyone has an idea why Mr. Keith Bell was not put in charge of national security. Maybe Mr. Bell, too, has come to realize it is not good to be in the spotlight and on the front line all the time. Some jobs are done more effectively from behind the scenes and when conducted as covert operations.

The change doesn't sit well with Hubert Minnis.....it doesn't sit well with me either. I can't think of anyone more incompetent than PG, and this is such an important position right now.
